Introducing IEPs: How Personalized Learning Could Help Track Your Child’s Progress

Every child has a unique set of strengths and weaknesses, and learns in different ways, which is why the one-size-fits-all learning style restricts many children from reaching their fullest potential. Fortunately, however, parents now have the option to work with a team of teachers, school district representatives, and others with knowledge about their child, to draft an Individualized Education Plan (IEP) that maps out the child’s specific goals for the school year—both academic and personal—as well as any resources they may need.

With the ongoing pandemic, the transition from in-person to distance learning has highlighted how the implementation of IEPs can allow children to thrive in any environment, including virtual classrooms. A personalized learning plan can help ensure that their child is able to adjust to online learning, and to engage with classroom material.

About the IEP

According to the BC Ministry of Education, Individualized Education Plans or IEPs can help formalize planning processes, track individual learning, and serve as the basis for reporting each student’s progress.

The process of getting an IEP can be lengthy, as it ensures a personalized learning plan for the child. It usually involves screenings, meetings, assessments with a team of teachers and other service providers including Speech Language Pathologists or Behavioural Consultants to allow parents to actively engage with their child’s learning. By identifying a child’s strengths, challenges and creating trackable goals, parents will be equipped with resources to be their child’s best support system, and to open doors for future success.

IEPs at C.O.D.E.

At C.O.D.E., our one-on-one classes are already personalized to complement each student’s unique learning needs. If your child has an IEP and you are comfortable sharing it with us, we would be happy to discuss with both you and your child to understand which learning style works best for them, and to incorporate that learning plan into their lessons. Our tutors, who have been trained by professionals in the community, will then use the finalized plan to support each student's learning habits. With our mission to make quality education accessible, our classes help students gain confidence in their abilities, and also, to translate their individual goals into reality.

An IEP could be the first step to a deeper understanding of your child’s strengths that help them build and improve on existing skills. As children learn and grow best in environments that suit their needs, an IEP is a “working document” and a more fluid learning plan that could serve as a powerful tool for each child’s success.
